Have you ever used to write essays about leadership? I guess some of you have. Some of you may have experienced a problem of lack of information on this topic. I hope this leadership essay will be useful for you and you will find enough material to write a good work. Any teamwork activity with common goals presupposes necessity of its managing. A head or a leader should be a person to maintain the activity of other members of a team. Socio-psychological researches have proved that a group having a leader ensures successful results rather than a group without one.

Modern world lacks leaders in the purest sense. They are necessary for various spheres of life: personal, professional or social. Leadership is ability to guide others as well as managing one’s own life. We can live following somebody and implementing desires, dreams and needs of others while sacrificing our own ones’. We reach the level of development that others settled for themselves. This way we can lose a bigger part of our skill to manage our lives.

Let’s give definition of leadership. According to dictionary leadership is the activity of leading a group of people, organization or ability to do this. There are different styles of it, which occur in various life situations. I think I should mention its main types in this essay on leadership:

  1. Authoritarian style. It is characterized by minimum democracy and maximum control. Leaders make all decisions on their own. This style provides acceptable activity results: productivity, profit, high quality of work done. Although authoritarian type is effective enough, it has more disadvantages: false decisions, neutralization of people’s creativity and initiative, their inactivity, unfavorable psychological atmosphere. These aspects can negatively influence each group member and call forth stress. This leadership style is the most appropriate for critical situations like emergency or hostilities.
  2. Democratic style. It can be described by maximum democracy and control. Each team member participates in discussions and decision-making as well as the head of the meeting does. Opinions and initiative of each person in a group are taken into account. This style can be considered as the most effective. It guarantees right decisions, successful activity results, people’s initiative and creativity. Democratic style is useful if a leader has intellectual, organizational and communicative abilities.
  3. Laissez-fair style. It is characterized by maximum democracy and minimum control. Although each participant of a group can express their views, they are unable to adjust it with their positions. There is no control and any right decision-making. This type leads to unsuccessful results, unfavorable atmosphere. There is no cooperation among team members and incentives to work. Various conflicts may occur because of different interests.

Different specialists have been disputing if leaders are born or made. Some of them give convincing proofs that someone may have extraordinary peculiarity from birth which makes one a leader. Others persuade that leaders can be “created” under conditions of certain combination of education, training and experience. Anyway, innate traits as well as gained ones are factors for person’s behavior and one’s ability to become a leader. Such individual can influence other people in order to unite them for joint work with common goals and interests. We can notice a leader as the most authoritative person in any kind of activity and social life. We may distinguish two meanings within the term “leader”:

  • A person who has widely manifested and useful traits of character that stimulate productive activity. Such leaders serve as role models to other people.
  • An individual who deals with decision-making, which is the most significant for a group. Such leaders have abilities to unite people for achieving goals of a group. Despite the chosen leadership style, this person regulates relationships in a team, defends its values and interests.

There are factors that influence the choice of a leader:

  1. The situation calling for a leader who is able to manage a group under definite conditions.
  2. A person having definite traits that fit certain circumstances.
  3. Desire of a crew to submit to this person.

Individual’s desire of being a leader is not sufficient to become one. A person wishing it should have certain traits, which a true leader possesses. Otherwise, this man will fail because it may turn to be too difficult mission. Besides, you should have desire for studying, training and developing skills that can help in leadership. Let’s mention several important traits of character which a leader must have:

  • Enthusiasm. A person who claims: ”I can do this!” will be able to achieve goals set. Firstly, you should find any activity or sphere, which inspires you and, where you want to get great success. You need to be persistent while evolving your enthusiasm. You may have some failures but it does not mean that you have to give up. You must continue your hard working over your aims, otherwise you are not the one who is able to be a leader.
  • Courage. Any person trying to become a leader must be brave with mind and body. Courage is necessary for overcoming obstacles that may appear. A true leader considers any trouble as regular test, which will help to achieve one’s goals. Being courageous you can solve a problem and find the right decision.
  • Faith. It is significant requirement for being a good leader. Although you can’t be sure your work will be successful, you have to believe in it. If you don’t have faith you cannot demand it from others. Believing in yourself is even more important than believing in success. This way you can make surrounding people trust and believe in you. It guarantees achieving purposes.
  • Integrity. You must always keep your promise, be punctual and never let people down. You have to be tactful and precise while speaking to anybody of the same social level. You must think over all pros and cons before making any decision.
  • Loyalty. It does not mean you should be spineless. A true leader will never leave any team member in trouble, because he realizes that each person in a group is important.

So, leadership is the process of managing a crew, where a leader is a person who can be relied on. We face it during whole life and all its spheres, whether you are captain of football team or a president of a school or a chief at work. Depending on various factors, we can distinguish different leadership styles, which are effective in different ways. A team cannot exist without heading. Every definite situation needs a leader with certain traits who will be able to manage, guide and motivate the group.
