Three Major World Religions Essay

In: Popular topics

There are a lot of religions around the world, all of them reflect the peculiarities of mentality of one or another nation. The theme of beliefs is actual as we can see on the assumption of the big number of religion essays. And there is nothing strange, because it takes the huge part of our life and often creates disagreement in virtue of the difference of views. Thereby, a lot of essays on religion topics describes individual assessments of denominations.

That religion definition essay I want to dedicate to three largest world religions and their features. There is a high necessity to consider every of them independently for better understanding of its essence.

The number of religions in the world has more exceed 2200 and it is increasing right along. Such process is a product of major beliefs subdivision. There are emphasized major religions and some of their branches:

  • Christianity (Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant, Roman Catholic, etc.) - 32%
  • Islam (Sunni, Shia, Sufi) - 23% and growing
  • Hinduism (Vaishnavism, Shaivism, etc.)- 13%

There we can see only some of major religions, but, as a matter of fact, the number of all existing churches in the world is about 34 000. In large, they are not independent denominations, just an element of biggest religions, but a lot of them consider themselves as autonomous.

However, the question arises: What is religion? I mean, what is religion in essence, not subjective perception of faith. The difference between those notions is really significant. Individual interpretation leads to changes in the fundamental concept, thereby I want to consider the very essence of religion.

First of all, let us turn to the etymology. From the Latin religare, which means “to bind, to tie” and also from word religio, which means “integrity”. In this way, we can see, that fundamental idea of religion was the relation between human and gods. Moreover, it would be ridiculous to suggest that any faith could be inherently destructive because in the heart of any religion are boon and virtue. What is more, it concerns all of confessions (I would remind, in essence). The definition of religion is really important for better understanding of its concept because for many people it is a very abstract notion even for adherents.

One of the major problems in the world is belligerent attitude to others persuasions, based on difference of views, hereby prejudgment and hatred arise among the people. Such position leads to the vulgarization of sacrality, which is the main idea of religion. The secrecy of bond between and higher mind disappears. In order to terminate vicissitudes, let`s consider a few of major world religions.

Christianity is the largest world religion, based on the teaching of Jesus Christ, which has more that 2 million adherents around the world and includes a lot of denominations (the approximate number is 34 000). The most popular faith groups are:

  • Catholicism
  • Eastern Orthodoxy
  • Oriental Orthodoxy
  • Protestantism

Each of the denominations below has many subdivisions with their own rules, doctrines and imperatives, sometimes they even describe themselves as independent churches. However, all of them are based on ideas of Christian ethics, that implies following provisions:

  • Notions of sinful and virtuous behavior. This point includes rules of morality in Christian perspective. All those rules described in the Holy Scriptures.
  • Belief in one God, in spite of fact, that many denominations change a shape of faith and worship rules.
  • The main idea of Christianity is mercy.

The second largest religion is Islam, has about 1 million followers. It has the biggest popularity in Arabian countries. Islam based on the teaching of Prophet Muhammad in 7th-century in Saudi Arabia. What is remarkable, Muslims acknowledge prophets of other earlier religions like Christianity and Judaism, but consider Islam like genuine faith for themselves. The holy scripture of Muslims - The Koran.

Muslims are very serious about devotion and rules adherence. The major rules followed by Muslims are:

  • Faith in One and Only God - Allah. The belief requires no doubt and should come from love and trust.
  • Pilgrimage to Mecca
  • Alms
  • Starvation
  • Prayer

Next significant religion is Hinduism, predominantly, it takes place in India, where its history began. The biggest part of the population of India identifies themselves as a Hinduism adherents. Some parts of Hinduism belief are very popular in Europe and America as a cultural phenomenon, particularly, different types of yoga, meditations and other practices.

Hinduism includes a lot of different beliefs in virtue of polytheistic manner. It has a definite class division on varnas:

  • Brahmans - knowledge. Priests belong to that class.
  • Kshatriyas - defense, that warriors and rulers provide.
  • Vaishyas - sustenance. It can be farmers, herders or merchants.
  • Shudras - service. The lowest class, in which are servants and laborers.

Hinduism is based on ideas of Dharma, what means definite universal rules that could help people become happy and avoid suffering. It also means the discharge of duties. Hinduism is not a homogeneous religion, because many adherents recognize one of the Indian pantheon of gods like Shiva, Vishnu or Krishna. The Hinduism books of worship are The Vedas, The Upanishads, The Bhagavad Gita and The Pranas.

To sum up, I want to say that it does not matter what exactly you have select as an object of faith, everyone has a right to choose. Nobody can blame others views, only because those views do not coincide with the outlook of that person. We all have to understand that mutual respect is a pledge of highly moral society. Each of religion beliefs is a spiritual development tool and should help people to reach consensus, not to induce aggression.
