The horror of despair from George Orwell
All the people of Oceania were subordinated to the ideology of some Party, which was represented by Big Brother. Many people do not like this course of events. Winston Smith who works in the Ministry of Truth is one those people. But he understands that if he will tell someone about his dissatisfaction, it would end badly for him. So he begins to keep a personal diary and writes there all his thoughts. Keeping a diary is as dangerous as the public expressing of dissatisfaction. One day, he discovers that his colleague Julia is watching him. He is afraid that she might suspect something and gives out his “crime”. However, everything is contrary. Julia sends him a secret love note and they begin to meet secretly. Smith fears that soon their meetings can be stopped and will be punished as illegal meetings between a man and a woman is prohibited.
Smith and Julia go to a high-ranking official O’Brien. Winston thinks that O’Brien attends a secret fraternity and Smith with Julia want to join it. Some time later, Julie is arrested, and Smith is brought to the Ministry of Love where he is tortured. He is forced to relinquish his love and himself. Executioners “cured” him from the revolutionary moods. At first, Smith blames himself but then realizes that chooses the right path and doesn’t love anybody but Big Brother and the Party.

“1984” is one of the most famous novels in the genre of dystopia that is standing on a par with such works as “We” by Yevgeny Zamyatin, “Brave New World” by Aldous Huxley and “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury. Many terms that were invented by the author and used in this book are now common and used to describe the social order and that is why I decided to write this 1984 analysis essay. According to many people “1984” contains many distinct allusions to the USSR. But in the book, there is a warning that applies not only to the countries of the former USSR but also to the whole world.
Readers first saw George Orwell’s novel “1984” in 1949. It was difficult post-war period: the Nazi regime in Germany just fell down; left-wing parties were gaining the popularity in Europe. The freedom was oppressed everywhere: hunger, poverty, the invention of nuclear weapons – that is what progressive minds of the severe time thought about. In the world, there is a never-ending war, but the equal level of development arms of all sides does not let any party to win a final victory. The world is divided into three parts: Oceania, in which there are all actions, West Asia and Eurasia. Each of these parts has its own Party and its own ideology, which is carefully trying to impose to all people. In the world of Orwell, there are no real feelings, interests, people live like zombies and completely obey to the Party that seeks to replace man’s family, home and job. The person also doesn’t exist as a person. Party has completely consumed him. There is only a small part of people that tries to resist but in vain. To this category belongs the protagonist. But why did the main character Smith go against Big Brother only after that when he met the girl with whom felt in love? Why haven’t he done this before? Had he thought about it from the beginning? Is it because love adds confidence to him or he just understands a situation in which get? I think it is all about love. Love is the only thing that the Party still could not overcome; yes, it can “throw away” a family, children but not love. The end of the novel is unhappy and expected. Indeed, in such a system people just can’t be happy and how would the main character not try to change the world, he still had not received a happiness , but he gives the push, which may lead to the restructuring of the world and change life for the better. Of course, Smith is not the man who can be the leader and it was clear from the beginning. Winston is a weak man, morally weak. He could not become the leader of the rebellion, couldn’t go against the Party.
We build our future and what it will be depend on us. But if the moment is missed, then there will be nothing to return. This book is very sad; it is frightening and terrifying because we understand that it is possible. This is the worst. One wonders: how? How people let this happen? How did a civilized society allow this? The answer is simple – society has let things slide and let someone from “above” to make decisions instead of them.
The book made me think about some things. In fact, what does distinguish a total control over a population of “1984” from the system of our modern world? A phone, Internet, TV – all of it is easy to control and all of this is already under control. All our efforts aimed at self-realization, self-improvement, intellectual development, freedom of thought and expression – all of this can turn against us. How a person who accustomed to constant streams of information, will be able to live in a world where knowledge is under the ban? I strongly do not recommend reading this book to people who are under 18 years and to people with a thin nervous organization and unstable psyche. Orwell’s novel has many scenes of violence, the most sophisticated torture, and hopeless pessimism. It is a serious and taking to the deep book, with lots of great quotes and thought-provoking.
