Cheerleaders accompany different kinds of sports, but at the same time, cheerleading is an independent sport. It hosts a variety of competitions. Originally the American television broadcast cheerleading competitions. Now we can see it in almost any country. In total there are about 6 million cheerleaders worldwide. If you're a cheerleader then you're successful, beautiful and popular.

The history of the cheerleading

Cheerleading originated in the USA in the 1870-ies and has gained the most widespread by the mid-twentieth century. The first club group of support was organized in New Jersey at Princeton University in 1865. But all count that the year of birth of cheerleading is 1898. That year the season for the football team of the University of Minnesota did not work out. Before the next game at the University was held a meeting which was attended by students from all faculties. One of professors put forward a brilliant scientific argument in favor of spectator support of athletes at competitions. He argued that the incentive of several hundred students focuses on positive energy, which is directed at the team and helps it win. Unfortunately, contrary to all expectations, the team of the University of Minnesota defeated with the score 28:0. Is such support has not worked? It had to come up with something else. And then there was Johnny Campbell. He was a first-year student of the medical faculty. He can be called the first cheerleader. Johnny explained that someone needs to lead the chanting, and slogans should be varied. So on the next game under the leadership of Campbell the audience chanted the chant “Rah, Rah, Rah! Ski-U-Mah! Hoo-Rah! Hoo-Rah! Varsity! Varsity! Minn-e-so-tah!”. Thus, in the United States originated cheerleading. It's hard to believe, but in the beginning this sport was more popular among the strong half. However, when in the forties a vast number of men went to the front the situation has changed dramatically, and now over 90% of cheerleaders are women. In the late 40-ies, when the men returned from the front in cheerleading have been added such elements as turning and twisting. Gymnastic elements are usually performed by men while the girls danced. This was the beginning of the formation dance teams. In 1995 it was founded the European cheerleading Association (ECA), which took into its hands the leadership of the cheerleaders movement in Europe. The first European championship of cheerleading was held in 1995 in Germany, in Stuttgart. In 2001 was founded the International Federation of Cheerleading (IFC), where then entered Japan in addition to the countries which are members of the European Association, where in 2001 was held the first world championship of cheerleading.

Support group

It just seems that the cheerleaders only fill the breaks in sport matches. In fact, the main mission is to cheer and support athletes of their favorite team, and also to remove the aggression of the fans and add optimism. To do this, the cheerleaders have to wave pompons to attract the attention of viewers, clap hands with pompons over their head showing fans a sample. Also they dance with the acrobatics complex, chant chants to appeal fans to support the team, shout out slogans to increase morale of the athletes and inform the audience about news of the match with banners.

Sport or dance

Cheerleading consists of two directions. There are cheer and dance. Cheer is the pyramids, tumbling, jumps, loud and clear chants, pompons and stunning dynamics. Dance is a beautiful dance movements, unusual choreography, splits and incendiary energy.

How to decide to become a cheerleader?

To become a cheerleader you need to dedicate yourself to this sport. At first you need to decide what you want to do. Cheer or dance. If you want to learn acrobatic elements – go to cheer, if you are ready to dance, make a pirouette, and perform the splits then go in dance. Start do it at your school and support your football team. If you've never practiced gymnastics or cheerleading and know a little about it, you have to train a month in the preparatory group, to learn the basics, and then join directly to the team. The next item is the physical aspect. Need to be flexible, with good extension. The better the flexibility, the less likely to injure yourself, the body will get used to twisting and flexing. If you are afraid, you will not be able to learn new elements, improve acrobatics in dancing, etc. You have to try. But most importantly, you must bring all of your energy if your team takes first place!

Myths about cheerleading

There are some myths which we will try to dispel. It is said that the cheerleaders have to be thin or even skinny. It is a common misconception that cheerleaders have to be thin. Cheerleaders come in all sizes. Besides, your skills and abilities are most important than your size. Also growth is not a major factor for cheerleaders. It can affect your position in the team, but it will not harm the team. It is believed that cheerleading is for girls not for guys. Do you think you can lift a girl three feet in the air above your head? You are expected to catch her and save her from any wound. Cheerleading has happened with men and male cheerleaders are a large part of cheerleading. I want to add that cheerleading is quite a dangerous sport. As with any athletic activity a cheerleading has some dangers, but if everything is done correctly and if all safety instructions are observed there is not more dangerous than in any other sport.

Cheerleading can deal with everybody: skinny, chubby, buxom and relaxed, lively and shy. Physical development, communication with peers, friendly approach helps to identify creative talents, leadership qualities, overcoming complexes and produce the desire for success! Cheerleading gives a good acrobatic and choreographic training, a good stretch and plasticity, the possibility of performances at public events in the city and region, participating in competitions in cheerleading, a great opportunity for the development of a harmonious personality. Therefore, cheerleading is a way to success, a healthy and an active lifestyle!
